Today we are very excited to release our Project Journey Report for containerd. This is the fourth such report we have issued for one of our graduated projects.
containerd is a container runtime with an emphasis on simplicity, robustness, and portability. The project was accepted into CNCF in March 2017. containerd’s scope includes both providing core container runtime functionality as a CRI implementation for Kubernetes, as well as container runtime capabilities to the Docker engine. Its widest usage and adoption occurs as the layer between the Docker engine and the Kubernetes OCI executer.
This report attempts to objectively assess the state of the containerd project and how CNCF has impacted the progress and growth of containerd.
Some of the highlights of the report include:
- Code contributions – The total number of companies contributing code has increased by 157% since containerd joined CNCF, from 53 to 136.
- Development Velocity – containerd has enjoyed a nearly 300% expansion of individual contributors over the two years since the project joined CNCF.
- Project documentation – Since joining CNCF, the number of authors and companies committing documentation to containerd has grown by 146.6% and 129.4%, respectively.
Additionally, the containerd project will be onsite at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe in Amsterdam on March 30-April 2, 2020. The project is hosting a variety of talks and presentations including cluster stability, container management and more. We encourage you to check out the schedule for more information.
As the project approaches one year since graduation it is showing continued rapid growth and broad use in production. We are excited to see continued success for containerd and invite you to read the report to learn more about the project’s growth.
