It’s all these and more, as the world’s biggest events in open-cloud and container-based development descend on Detroit – a city known by many names and renowned for its pioneering spirit.

The event packs in five days of tutorials, keynotes and networking options but there’s something different in the air – and it isn’t the scent of double-baked rye bread.

Security Slam

The Security Slam, which began at the beginning of October and will conclude at the conference,  debuts with an opportunity not only to beef-up your project’s security but also help earn $50,000 towards the diversity scholarship fund. CNCF is partnering with Sonatype in an initiative sponsored by Google to measure project success in hitting CNCF’s security standards. Google will donate $2,500 to the CNCF’s Diversity Scholarship Fund in the name of each project that achieves full security.

Kid’s Day

Also new to KubeCon + CloudNativeCon is Kid’s Day on October 23, the day before the main event kicks-off. This is designed to give young creatives in the Detroit area a chance to fire their imaginations in two great STEAM workshops.  Pre-register your child today and spread the word to Detroit locals!  Registration to KubeCon + CloudNativeCon is not required for children to participate in Kid’s Day.

  1. Our Minecraft Modding workshop provides a fun-packed opportunity for youngsters aged 8-14 to build characters, create a digital world and construct special effects – all designed to inspire a passion for technology and coding!
  2. Our second workshop invites kids to track down that crazy Pokemon menagerie fresh from a daring laboratory escape. Using a combination of a Raspberry Pi device, Java and 3D printed pokeball, kids will code their way to capturing the crew!

Contribfest

Youngsters don’t get all the fun when it comes to hunting down rogue characters at this year’s conferences: we’re hosting Contribfest which will provide a space for tracking technical debt, eradicating bugs, and eliminating outstanding issues and requests in CNCF projects. Contribfest brings together project contributors and maintainers in a shared space to tear through outstanding problems – the big, the small, the niggly. Projects primed for Contribfest scrubbing include Knative Eventing, KubeVirt, Ago, Flux and Prometheus. Check out the full lineup.

Resumé writing workshop

As part of our pre-event programming activities, attendees are invited to join us for this special DEI event that will include a resume writing workshop, mingling, networking and appetizers! The event is sponsored by Visit Detroit and will be held on October 25 from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM. Special invitations have been made to our scholarship recipients and local organizations that promote diversity, equality and inclusion in technology.

Detroit!

Did we mention the city hosting this stellar line-up is also an incredible place to visit, should you wish to extend your stay? With the inaugural Kid’s Day in mind, you have easy access to some of Detroit’s best-ranked family activities including the Henry Ford Museum, Sea Life Michigan Aquarium and Detroit Zoo.

For music-lovers there is, of course, the Motown Museum Experience – once known as Hitsville USA and before that Studio A – where Marvin Gaye and countless others cut timeless tracks. You can sing and dance at the Museum while discovering the story of these greats.

For daytime wandering, Detroit offers the Eastern Market – the largest outdoor farmer’s market in the US and dating from 1841 – the waterfront, incredible murals and plentiful shopping, cafes and restaurants. And at night, drop into Ready Player One – a 3,500 square foot arcade housing 40 classic arcade and pinball machines dating from the 1980s and 1990s that are all operational!

We hope you’ll join us on 24-28 October 2022 in person in Detroit, or virtually from anywhere in the world. Register now and begin planning your KubeCon experience today!
