Community post by Diego Cordero, Graduate in Telecommunications Engineering

Hello everyone! I’m Diego Cordero from Lima, Peru, and I graduated with a degree in telecommunications engineering. In this blog, I share my experience volunteering for the first time at a Cloud Native community event in Peru.

Recently, I had the opportunity to volunteer at KCD Lima, Peru, which was an enriching and inspiring experience. It all started with a post on the KCD Lima LinkedIn page announcing they needed volunteers to help organize the event. It was the opportunity I was waiting to contribute to positively impacting the community.

KCD Lima

I remember that weeks passed after I filled out the volunteer application, and I didn’t receive any response, so I decided to reach out to them. The organizers noticed my interest in being part of the volunteer team and immediately agreed to consider me, assigning me to the Marketing and Communications group. This is how my journey started!

KCDs: What Are They and Why Should You Participate?

Kubernetes Community Days promote Cloud Native technologies, its ecosystem and communities, and bring together enthusiasts, professionals, and industry experts to share knowledge and encourage collaboration within the community.

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) supports KCDs globally. These locally organized events help grow and sustain Kubernetes and other Cloud Native communities. You can find upcoming events on the CNCF KCD website.

Attending will allow you to learn about the latest trends, share your experiences, and expand your network within the Cloud Native ecosystem. It’s an event that will help you advance your career and become an active part of an evolving community!

Preparation, Organization, and Communication Strategies

From the moment I joined the volunteer team, I could see the commitment and dedication of everyone involved. The weeks leading up to the event were intense, with planning meetings, task coordination, and ensuring all details were covered.

As part of the Marketing and Communications team, my main responsibilities included promoting the event through social media and other channels, including details about the sessions, our sponsors, and the various activities and opportunities we offered to the attendees.

To carry out the various tasks assigned to me, I used several tools that helped me:

Event Day

July 20th arrived, the primary day of the event.

The morning started busy, finalizing minor details before the kickoff. The role I chose as a volunteer on the event day was “room monitoring,” which involved everything from managing access to the presentation rooms to supporting the speakers if they needed assistance. It was incredible to see so many passionate people gathered in one place, all sharing the same enthusiasm for learning, teaching, and spreading knowledge about cloud native technologies.

Highlights

One of the highlights was the opening talk by Chris Aniszczyk, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), who spoke about the CNCF community, from its origins and evolution to its various projects and trends for 2025.

During the closing, we couldn’t miss the group photos with the organizers, all our speakers, the volunteers, and all the attendees. These moments will be captured and mark a significant milestone for the Cloud Native community in Peru.

Volunteering at KCD Lima, Peru, taught me many things, including:

Final Reflections

My experience as a volunteer at the KCD Lima was rewarding. Not only did I have the opportunity to learn and develop essential soft skills, but I also contributed to strengthening the Cloud Native community in Peru. This event allowed me to meet many people sharing my passion for technology, enriching my professional network and knowledge in the field. The satisfaction of seeing the positive impact of our work on the community was immense and motivated me to continue participating in similar initiatives in the future.

Acknowledgments

I would like to thank all the organizers for their desire to make this first KCD Lima, Peru, possible, especially Edith Puclla, for her constant support and follow-up during my time with the Marketing and Communications team. I also want to thank the speakers who shared their knowledge and experiences with the attendees during the sessions. Seeing each room filled, even with people standing to attend the talks, shows the enthusiasm to learn.

To my fellow volunteers, with whom we worked diligently for several weeks to deliver a high-quality event and who saw the fruits of our labor on the day of the event. And especially to the attendees, thank you for your interaction on social media, the promotion of the event, and your constant participation during the sessions. I am immensely grateful to every one of you.

Invitation

Finally, I invite everyone to join future events, whether as attendees or, even better, as volunteers. It’s an incredible experience and an excellent way to give back to the community for everything it has given us.

We can all contribute to the growth of the Cloud Native community in Peru by engaging on social media or mentioning a friend and encouraging them to join. No one is born knowing, but we can all learn along the way, and learning together within a community is even more exciting.
