Japan’s CNCF DevStats 2024

Have you heard of CNCF’s DevStats? DevStats is a tool that collects and quantifies all contributions to CNCF projects from GitHub. By leveraging this data, you can analyze development activities within CNCF projects from various perspectives.

One key metric is Contribution, which quantifies activities such as reviews, comments, commits, issues, and pull requests (PRs) on GitHub. This metric allows you to objectively assess a project’s contribution levels. Additionally, contributions can be aggregated by country, individual, and other perspectives.

In this article, we use DevStats data from 2024 to focus on individual contributions in Japan and examine the impact Japanese engineers made throughout the year.

Top 10 Contributors in CNCF Projects

This time, we introduce the top 10 Japanese contributors with the highest Contribution scores from the five CNCF Graduated projects with the most Japanese contributors.

• Except for Kubernetes, Contribution is aggregated across the entire GitHub organization of each project.
• Company affiliations are based on information from cncf/gitdm and may not reflect the actual affiliation.

Kubernetes

Since contributions to the Kubernetes GitHub organization include many non-code activities such as translations, we present the data separately for the kubernetes/kubernetes repository and the overall Kubernetes organization.

Kubernetes had the highest number of contributors from Japan, with a total of 93 contributors.

fluentd

Three contributors to fluentd achieved Contribution scores of 1,000 or more, among the highest worldwide for Fluentd.

Argo

In Argo, the top contributor, yu-croco, stood out significantly. While the total Contribution score was not particularly high, a notable aspect was the number of contributors from Japan, which reached 23—more than in other CNCF Graduated projects.

Containerd

In Containerd, akihirosuda, who was awarded CNCF Top Committer in 2023, recorded an outstanding Contribution score. His score of 4,392 was the highest among all contributors worldwide.

Cilium

Cilium, which graduated in 2023, ranked as the 5th most contributed-to project by Japanese developers in 2024. This result reflects the growing attention and momentum Cilium has gained in Japan.

Finally, here are the top 20 Japanese contributors based on Number across all CNCF projects.

Conclusion

By analyzing DevStats data, we can quantify the contributions of developers supporting CNCF projects. Their efforts play a vital role in sustaining CNCF every day. We hope that highlighting their contributions in this blog will motivate them.

This is the first year we have conducted this analysis, and we look forward to seeing how things evolve in 2025. Continuous tracking will provide more meaningful insights over time. Notably, KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Japan 2025 will take place next year, and we hope this conference will further encourage contributions from Japan.Additionally, some contributors may find that their listed company may be outdated or incorrect or that they are not appearing in the rankings despite residing in Japan and actively contributing. These details can be updated via cncf/gitdm.

CNCF の DevStats をご存知ですか？DevStats はCNCF Project でのあらゆる貢献活動を GitHub から集計し、数値化しているツールです。このデータを活用することで、CNCF Project で行われている開発活動を様々な観点で分析できます。

中でも Contribution という指標は、GitHub 上でのレビュー、コメント、コミット、Issue、Pull Request（PR）による貢献を数値化したものです。この指標を活用することで、プロジェクトへの貢献度を定量的に把握できます。また、Contribution は国別や個人別など、さまざまな切り口で集計することも可能です。

本記事では、2024 年の日本における DevStats のデータをもとに、特に個人の貢献に焦点を当てて紹介します。日本のエンジニアたちが 2024 年にどのような活躍をしたのか、その足跡をここで振り返ります。

CNCF プロジェクトでの Top 10

今回は、CNCF Graduated プロジェクトの中で日本の貢献者数が多い上位 5 プロジェクトから、特に Contribution が高い 10 名を紹介します。

• Companyはcncf/gitdm上の記載に基づくものであり、実際と異なる場合があります

Kubernetes

Kubernetes の場合は翻訳などコードに対する直接的な貢献でないものも多く含まれているため、kubernetes/kubernetes リポジトリと全体と言うカテゴリで分けて紹介します。Kubernetes は日本からの貢献者数が最も多く、93人という結果でした。

Kubernetes organization 全体

fluentd

fluentd では Contributionが 4 桁台の方が 3 名もいらっしゃいました。fluentd の世界全体としてもトップの数値となります。

Argo

Argo では 1 位の yu-croco さんが圧倒的でした。Contribution の数値はそこまで多くはないものの、日本からの貢献者数が 23 名と他の CNCF Graduated プロジェクトより多いと言うのが特徴的でした。

Containerd

Containerd では2023 年に CNCF Top Committer を受賞した、akihirosuda さんが圧倒的な数字となっていました。また、4392 と言う数字は全世界の貢献者の中でも1 位でした。

Cilium

2023 年に Graduated になったばかりの Cilium が 2024 年の日本からの貢献者が多いプロジェクトの 5 位となりました。これは日本からの注目度の高さ、勢いを感じる結果となりました。

最後に CNCF 全体の Number の上位 20 名の日本人を紹介します。

DevStats のデータを見ることで CNCF Project に貢献している開発者を数値で見ることができます。これらの人々の活動は CNCF 全体を日々支えています。このブログで彼らを紹介することがこれらの活動のモチベーションに少しでも繋がることになれば幸いです。また、この集計は 2024 年が最初となります。2025 年はどのようになるのか連続して観測することで意味のあるデータになることが期待されます。2025 年は KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Japan 2025 が開催されます。このカンファレンスを契機にさらに日本からの貢献が活発になることを祈ります。

また、今回のこのデータを見て、所属が古かったり、日本在住のはずだがランキングに載っていないという方もいると思います。これらの情報は cncf/gitdm から更新が可能です。
