Get to know Nelson
This week’s Kubestronaut in orbit is Nelson Hilario Filipe, a DevSecOps Engineer and our first Kubestronaut in Mozambique. Nelson has a strong passion for shift-left security, and embarked on the Kubestronaut program to deepen his expertise in securing Kubernetes environments and workloads. He is dedicated to implementing security measures throughout the entire development lifecycle, from development to deployment, to enable secure operations and maintain a strong security posture for cloud native applications.
If you’d like to be a Kubestronaut like Nelson, get more details on the CNCF Kubestronaut page.
When did you get started with Kubernetes and/or cloud-native? What was your first project?
My first cloud native project was related to rebuilding the on-prem OpenShift Cluster of the company I was with at the time.
What are the primary CNCF projects you work on or use today? What projects have you enjoyed the most in your career?
I use Kubernetes, Istio, and ArgoCD these days.
How have the certs or CNCF helped you in your career?
The certifications have opened many opportunities and increased my market value in the job market.
What are some other books/sites/courses you recommend for people who want to work with k8s?
I would definitely recommend books from Benjamin Muschko for CKA, CKAD and CKS. Check them out!
What do you do in your free time?
In my free time, I enjoy watching Japonese Animes.
What would you tell someone who is just starting their K8s certification journey? Any tips or tricks?
If you are just starting out, learn by doing – practice, practice! A few tips I’ll pass along: it’s preferable to go imperative instead of declarative and make usage of the dry-run command whenever possible.
Today the Cloud native ecosystem is way more than Kubernetes. Do you plan to get other cloud native certifications from the CNCF?
Yes, I would like to work on getting the Istio and ArgoCD certifications.
What else would you like to share in this feature?
Dedication and hard work always pay off.
