Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is a global financial services institution and Canada’s largest bank (based on market capitalization). Technology is vital for RBC to deliver cutting-edge services to our clients and advance our businesses, ultimately helping to shape financial services through innovation. It has never been truer than today, in a hyper-competitive landscape, that technology is critical to how we operate. In 2015, we began our cloud journey and quickly benefited from the scale and innovation offered by our cloud partners as we continued to invest in public cloud. In parallel, we strengthened our private cloud ecosystem on premises, transforming how we deliver technology to the thousands of technology teams building applications at RBC. We’ve been hooked on cloud-native technologies ever since.
Fast forward ten years and RBC is now invested in cloud technologies both on premises and in the public cloud. Our cloud capabilities have enabled successes that range across the enterprise, as we have:
- Built a mature DevOps practice with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery pipelines that deploy our applications to our cloud platforms. These pipelines offer security, automation, resiliency and standardization in our deployments.
- Developed new applications and runtimes that are deployed to Kubernetes, where we host more than 50,000 application instances across 200+ clusters worldwide.
- Built cloud native RBC Clear, an innovative cash management solution, in under 12 months.
- Helped enable RBC’s historic acquisition of HSBC Bank Canada with cloud.
- Enabled RBC Borealis through cloud capabilities, maturing RBC’s AI and data innovation.
It’s no stretch to say that cloud is a critical capability for RBC.
Partnering with CNCF
RBC is a leading technology company within financial services – and we’re proud of our progressive talent program, visionary focus on AI and strong ecosystem collaboration. This is why we are happy to join a growing group of CNCF Silver Partners. While we’re joining a well- established base of partners, membership with CNCF is a relatively new concept for banks, especially Canadian ones. This partnership marks a new era for us as a technology company. Our commitment to cloud-native technologies means we need to be active in the community and help shape the direction of important projects such as Kubernetes and various Terraform providers. Most importantly, we want to give back to the technology community that has been so critical to our success on our cloud journey.
My colleagues and I will be sharing a series of blogs on this platform that will outline different aspects of our cloud-native community at RBC, such as developer advocacy, security in cloud and delivering genAI.
We look forward to sharing more on our journey. In the meantime, you can learn more about technology at RBC here.
